Resolving Inconsistency Issues in Email
John Smaldino asked why email he receives doesn't always look the same when he forwards it to someone else. For instance, images that came inside the body of a message may end up as separate attachments when forwarded.
This is a peculiarity of the HTML (hypertext markup language) used by various email programs. HTML has a number of inconsistencies that can make a message appear differently from one email client to another. Pictures, for instance, can be intermingled with with text in Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and AOL Mail, but will be seen as attachments by users of Gmail and Yahoo Mail. Until all email providers decide to use the same version of HTML (don't hold your breath) these inconsistencies will continue.
Weird Formatting

(In other words, mail that looks like this sample.)
Yes, a program called "StripMail" will remove all the little pointies and reformat everything into easy-to-read text. StripMail can be downloaded from: Free Programs & Services, along with instructions I wrote on how to use the program.
Acquiring Additional Email Accounts
Janey Stott asked how to set up a second email account, in addition to the Outlook Express account provided by her ISP. Well, for additional accounts with the same ISP, it's the job of their tech support people to handle that. As for getting a Web-based email account, just go to the home page of Hotmail or AIM (among others) and click on "Sign Up for Mail." Our favorite is Gmail at
mail.google.com. (We currently have seven different Gmail accounts.)
AOL Problems
Art Yorke wrote to say his AOL Mail toolbar "Spell Check" button had disappeared, and asked how to get it back. Well, the best way to fix AOL glitches is to simply reinstall the program, which is available at
www.aol.com. AOL has always been good about maintaining subscribers' personal files, so they are unaffected by a reinstall. Art wrote back to say that doing so quickly fixed his problem.
Deleting Normal.dot to fix Microsoft Word Problems
Bob Pfeifer called to say each time he opens Microsoft Word a document he once wrote appears instead of a blank page. This glitch is usually caused by accidentally saving a document with the file name: Doc1.doc (which is Word's default name for a new, unsaved document).
Well, Bob was able to fix the problem by deleting another Word file named normal.dot.
Normal.dot is a template that holds all of Word's default settings along with any defaults a user may change. Word looks for this file each time the program is launched. If the file has been deleted, however, Word recreates it with all its original settings. Thus deleting this file is a way to fix many problems that may occur in Word.
More details on using this MSWord fix can be seen here: Delete Normal.dot.
